Artist 101: How to Make Your Name Known

As a musician, your job is to put out content you like and to create a fanbase. Using social media is extremely important; however, that is not the only place you need to think about marketing yourself and your music. You should also be thinking about your searchability. If someone types in your name, will they be able to find information regarding you as an artist? Here at Twentyfour-Eight & Co., we believe that artists should be able to market themselves and get their name out there. Here are a few tips on how to help you with SEO or search engine optimization.

  1. Create your website

Nowadays, a lot of artists get away with having just a LinkTree in their Instagram bio, but it doesn’t always provide all the information needed. As an artist, you should have a website. Your website should have a lot of great content on it. Have a biography of yourself that is well written, have an EPK (electronic press kit) available on your website and have some music, lyrics, and clickable and working links. This website should be able to work as a one-stop shop for fans to get to know you and have access to your content. Add images with subtitles.

This alone will help with your SEO instantly. It doesn’t have to be the fanciest website with a URL you bought if you don’t have the funds. Use websites like Wix which are free and allow for some creativity in an easy drag-and-drop format. However, if you have the funds, buying your own domain (a website that ends in .com and has no subdomain like Wix or Tumblr) would be even more beneficial.

2. Create a Wikipedia entry

Not only will having your own website help but creating a Wikipedia page for yourself will also be beneficial. People who want a quick look into who you are, where you came from, when you started your career, etc. will be able to get all of that information through Wikipedia alone rather than have to click through your site to get to your bio. Wikidata.org and MusicBrainz is also a place you should be able to put your information. Be as detailed as possible while revealing what you want to reveal.
Think about what you look for when searching for an artist and add that to your entries. However, make sure everything matches up with each other and it isn’t inconsistent.

3. Use tags and keywords

Make sure to use keywords in your website and Wiki entries. Things like your artist name, genre, and the word “music”, if you’re a band then the word “band”, “singer”, “songwriter”, and more words like this will show up if someone searches that up. Make sure your name is also attached to these keywords so it’s easier for your official website to show up when looking for “xx music” or “xx artist” or “xx band”.

Within your website, use invisible tags so your website will pop up if people search up something generic like “new pop artist” or something along those lines. Invisible tags act as keywords but without having to be seen.
